Guide
The sales funnel, simply
What a sales funnel is, the stages people move through before they buy, and the pages that move them along.
What is a sales funnel?
A sales funnel is the path people take from first hearing about you to becoming a customer. It is drawn as a funnel because it narrows: many people see your ad, fewer click, fewer still enquire, and some of those buy.
Thinking in a funnel helps you see where people drop out — and fix that step instead of just buying more traffic.
The stages of a sales funnel
1. Awareness
People find out you exist — through an ad, a search result, a social post or a recommendation. The goal here is attention from the right people.
2. Interest
They click to learn more. This is where your landing page or website does its work: it shows what you offer and why it fits them.
3. Consideration
They compare you with other options. Proof, clear pricing or a fixed quote, answers to common doubts and an easy next step matter most here.
4. Action
They enquire, book or buy. For service businesses this is usually a form, call or WhatsApp message — a lead — followed by a quote and a sale.
5. Retention
After the first sale, follow-up, good service and repeat offers turn a customer into a repeat buyer and a referral. Some funnels end at the sale; the best ones keep going.
A simple example
A clinic runs a Google Ads campaign for a new treatment.
- Awareness: someone searches for the treatment and sees the ad.
- Interest: they click and land on a page about that treatment only — not the clinic’s home page.
- Consideration: the page explains the treatment, introduces the doctor, answers price and safety questions and offers a free consultation.
- Action: they book the consultation with a short form or a WhatsApp tap.
- Retention: after the visit, the clinic follows up with care tips and a reminder for the next session.
At each step the clinic can count how many people moved on — and see exactly where the funnel leaks.
Where landing pages fit
Landing pages sit in the middle of the funnel, where interest becomes action. Ads create the click; the landing page decides whether that click becomes a lead. That is why a better page can lower your cost per lead without any change to the ads.
How to measure each stage
- Awareness: impressions and reach.
- Interest: clicks and click-through rate.
- Consideration: time on page, scroll depth and return visits.
- Action: leads, conversion rate and cost per lead.
- Retention: repeat purchases and referrals.
How to fix a leaking funnel
- Find the step with the biggest drop and fix that first.
- Make the page match the ad, so interest does not fade on arrival.
- Answer doubts before people have to ask: price, timeline, proof, guarantees.
- Shorten the form and add WhatsApp or call options.
- Follow up within minutes, not days.
- Test one change at a time and keep what works — that is conversion rate optimization.
Key takeaways
A sales funnel is simply the path from stranger to customer. Measure each step, fix the biggest leak first, and make sure the page between your ads and your sales team is built to turn clicks into leads. Our lead generation guide goes deeper on that middle step.
